Improved productivity and inventory control at BMW
As BMW increased its market share with ever more hi-tech and sophisticated products so the requirement for a modern Automated Computer Controlled Storage and Distribution System for the United Kingdom became apparent.
BMW chose Industore to provide such a system with an initial installation of two machines, complemented by a bespoke software system. Since this initial installation, two more phases have been implemented consisting of four and a further six Lean-Lifts - creating a total of 12 Lean-lifts. This package was able to achieve the pick speeds, efficiency and reliability hoped for by BMW.
There can be no doubt that the Hänel Lean-Lift, with its superb engineering, controls, features and hardware, was the core element of the solution provided. Space saving was one of the first issues to be addressed.
Due to the Lean-Lift's intelligent height optimizing software near 100% storage density was achieved. With space at a premium each cubic metre that BMW could utilise successfully was of utmost importance.
Moreover, the configuration of 12 Lean-Lifts picking simultaneously allows an extremely high pick speed enhanced by Industore's latest bespoke software.
The solution explained:
- A pick list of parts and components accumulates during the day directed from nearly 200 dealerships around the United Kingdom.
- Automated Vertical Storage at BMW- These are then sent as a batch pick list to the bank of 12 Lean-Lifts which precipitates a simultaneous running of the machines.
- Machine users only have to wait a matter of seconds for stock to be picked for them. Furthermore, the pick-to-light system identifies the selected location, this significantly reduces or eliminates picking errors.
- The products are presented at a user friendly and ergonomically correct height as opposed to the conventional user having to go to the product. This saves considerable amounts of user time and reduces the Health and Safety risks.
The Hänel Lean-Lift and Industore achieved every goal set by BMW for this project; BMW have also been able to use our highly qualified in-house programmers in order to achieve further solutions such as restricted access to high value products and increased levels of traceability.
Being a fast moving and highly successful company, BMW required a product and service that would be both dynamic and reliable.
