HONDA UK HISTORY
Honda of the UK manufacturing Limited has been manufacturing Engines and Automobiles from its site in Swindon since 1986.
They have seen the facility grow, from a small pre delivery inspection facility, to Honda’s largest European manufacturer, producing 3 models across 2 car plants.
Due to the decision to increase the model range at Swindon and incorporate the Jazz into production from October 2009, the Material logistics department were given the task of incorporating all Jazz safety stock into the current safety cage footprint.
THE SOLUTION
The Material Logistics Department within Honda working alongside Industore started to look at numerous space saving devices to incorporate the extra parts. Mobile racking, mezzanine flooring, double bay racking were all investigated, but proved too costly.
With detailed liaison and numerous site visits, Industore made a final proposal to Honda Swindon.
BY MOVING THESE PARTS TO LEAN-LIFTS WE MANAGED TO FREE UP 110M² OF RACKING. THE TOTAL FOOTPRINT TAKEN UP BY THE FOUR LEAN-LIFTS IS 20M²
For the application and number of parts to be stored, Industore suggested 4 Hanel Lean-Lifts at 3 metres x 2.8 metres with a height of 6 metres. Each machine is fitted with 49 trays to accommodate the number of boxes that Honda had stipulated.
In May 2009 Honda Placed the Order for the 4 machines, and the installation was completed on time for the introduction of the Jazz model.
